Five Months Old!

Jack and Benny,

What big boys you are! You have gone through a lot of changes in the past month (even the past few days!) and Mommy and Daddy are so proud and having so much fun raising you.

You got to see your first fireworks this past month (yeah, we didn't go until July 9th!), which you loved. You were both in awe of the pretty lights!

Jack, you are 15 lbs. (10%) today and 25.75" (25%) long! That is how much Mommy weighed at one year old. Can you imagine my surprise that one of my babies could be this big this early? As I like to say: chunk.a.munk. You are still long, but not really lean. Your tummy is adorable and you have rolls everywhere. Aunt Naomi says you look like you have cellulite in your legs. :)

You have a brand new schedule. You now sleep from 8:30 or 9 pm until 6 am with six feedings a day. You usually eat at 6 am, 9 am, 11:30 am, 2 pm, 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm, with two long naps after the 6 am feeding and the 2 pm feeding. Mommy loves long naps. Let me say that again for emphasis, Mommy LOVES long naps and 9 hour nights! Thank you for incorporating those into your day.

You have moved up into 6-9 month clothing, except for onesies, which I need to go buy! You are about to rip out of the 3-6 month onesies and I want to keep those for future kids, so I'd better go get some new ones fast. Believe it or not, you moved up for length, not girth - you couldn't stretch your feet out in your pjs and we felt a bit guilty, so we bought you 9 month pjs, even though they looked so long! You moved up to medium-sized (red edged) cloth diapers this month and you leak so much less at night in them... I guess you were ready before Mommy was.

You have started mimicking Benny's pterodactyl cries... so now you are the Pterodactyl Twins! You also use a lot of consonants now, I hear goo's and ma's and ba's over the monitor while you happily play after waking up.

Speaking of sleep, you are officially sleep trained now! You still have to cry just a bit before you fall asleep, but it never takes you more than 15 minutes and they are never screams, just getting your emotional energy out, I think. For your long naps, you wake up at the 45 minute mark and make tired noises for about 15 minutes before falling back asleep. But you usually wake up Benny during that time and he doesn't fall back asleep, so Mommy does have to separate you two into different rooms for naps.

You can sit up on your own now, although you can't maneuver yourself into the position. We think that your big bum helps hold you up, although you definitely have some strong abs, too!

Your neck strength has gone from shaky to amazing over the past month... you have finally caught up to Benny in that regard.

Yesterday you rolled over from tummy to back for the first time. Thank you for letting both Mommy and Daddy see it! We cheered so loudly and you looked SO proud of yourself.

You spend about 20-30 minutes per day on your tummy and you don't just lay there any more! You have figured out how to scoot when you are on your back and Mommy will often come back into the room after about 2 minutes to find you a couple feet away from where you started!

Benny, you are 12 lbs, 9 oz (<5%) and 24.75" (10%) long today! Every time I think that you once weighed only four pounds, I realize how huge you are now - you are working on tripling your birth weight!

You are on the same schedule as Jack, sleeping from 8:30 or 9 pm until 6 am with six feedings a day. You usually eat at 6 am, 9 am, 11:30 am, 2 pm, 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm, with two long naps after the 6 am feeding and the 2 pm feeding. You nap waaaay better than Jack does; he frequently wakes up at the 45 minute mark, whereas you almost always sleep 1.5-2 hours. I think your schedule is still changing, though, so we will see where we end up next month!

You are in 3-6 months clothes now, and yellow-edged (small) cloth diapers. You don't look so little next to Jack any more, though!

You don't talk as much as Jack because you like to listen to everything he says. You still do your pterodactyl scream when you are happy and you like to talk to mama during your 6 am feeding, while Jack is still pretty sleepy.

We finally got you out of your miracle blanket this month! Apparently you just needed to be 20 weeks old because that Monday I set you free for naptimes and you slept through them all. Way to go! You now sleep with your arms tucked under you to hold them down. You usually take your naps in mommy's room so that Jack won't wake you up mid-nap, and you love sleeping in the pack-n-play. You fall asleep immediately for almost every nap now! You still take your binky for naps and nighttime sleep, but we don't let it come out of your room unless you are REALLY cranky.

You are finally practicing sitting up. I guess you didn't want to let Jack take that prize on his own. You can sit on your own long enough for a picture to be taken, although you aren't really interested enough in doing it to maneuver yourself into the position.

During tummy time, you have just started reaching for things with one hand, while holding yourself up with the other. I never would have thought of that as a skill until I saw you attempting it the other day. I guess it really takes a lot of abs and arm strength.

You are inches away (literally!) from rolling from your back to tummy. I think the problem is that you don't like being on your tummy, so you will roll as you reach for something and then right before we think you are going to do it, you flop back onto your back. So I think that you are perfectly capable of doing it, just not interested. You frequently flip from tummy to back the second I put you down on your tummy.

You are gnawing away at anything that comes near your mouth. I think you are about to get your first tooth! You have a seriously hard bite... sometimes I cringe when I see you chewing on your own little fingers!
