Week 10: Getting a routine

After the rough month we have had (mastitis, viruses for the boys, tons of doctors visits!), I have been very much looking forward to getting a routine to my day! This week things have just sort of fallen into one...

The boys are demand-fed, and pretty much eat every 2.5-3.5 hours during the day. They eat pretty close to the same times every day, although I think our schedule is less than 24 hours because it seems like things shift 30-60 minutes earlier each day. :-P But at least I can predict what my days will be like.

Most of the time, the boys wake up to eat at the same time. Phew! Then other days (like today), Jack wakes up every 2.5 hours and Benny comes closer to 3-3.5. That makes my day chaotic! When you are feeding two slow eaters (we're talking 45 minutes each here!), and not feeding them at the same time, a lot of your day gets eaten up.

Oh and a question pertaining to the slow eating thing... My husband seems to think that I should "train" them to eat faster by only allowing them a certain amount of time. Does that make sense? To me, they are just slow eaters (like he is!) and if I cut them off early they will just not get as much... Or can babies learn to eat faster?

The great thing about having a routine is being able to accomplish things around the house! I can usually manage to do laundry on my own, cook dinner, and eat my other meals, with various projects getting done. I haven't gotten into the swing of cleaning the house yet, so Jonathan usually takes care of that on Saturdays. But I'd say I'm doing pretty well so far for having 10 week old twins and getting as much done as I do. :)

Haha - you can't train a baby to eat faster. But don't worry, at about 3 months, they will speed up. And then they get faster and faster as they master their suck and swallow routine and strengthen all those muscles related to eating. Eating is hard work! It will be so nice for you once they get to where they can finish a meal in 10-15 minutes. I know my little man was eventually so quick he was done in about 5 minutes. His suction was stronger than the highest setting on my breast pump, and I could hear him gulping!! But it didn't bother me because I was used to it.

In my humble opinion, I agree- you can't train your baby to eat faster. Evelyn took about an hour to eat for the first 3-4 months. Now, she's done in 10-15 minutes! Woot woot! But, it's just something they have to get the hang of....
